Biography of Yousuf Karsh
Yousuf Karsh was a Canadian photographer and one of the masters of portrait photography.
He was born in the city of Mardin, in southeastern Turkey, into an Armenian family. At the age of 14, Karsh was forced to flee Turkey with his parents and resettled in Syria to escape the genocide. Two years later, his parents sent him to Canada to live with his uncle George (Grigor) Nakash.

Karsh received his education there and worked at Nakash's studio. Recognizing Karsh's photographic talent, Nakash sent him to study under portrait photographer John Garo in Boston. After four years, Karsh returned to Canada and established his own studio in downtown Ottawa.
