His most famous role is Alex in Stanley Kubrick's iconic film "A Clockwork Orange" (1971).

McDowell was born into a working-class family.

In his youth, he worked in his father's pub and as a traveling salesman. After attending acting classes, he began performing in regional theaters. In 1964, he joined the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company.
Television and Film Success
McDowell's television debut came in 1965.
In 1968, he starred in Lindsay Anderson's groundbreaking film "If....." He later reunited with Anderson for "O Lucky Man!" (1973).
