Born on August 2, 1627, in Dordrecht, he initially studied under his father, Dirk van Hoogstraten, before working in Rembrandt's workshop. He painted biblical subjects, genre scenes, portraits, and still lifes.

In the early 1650s, Hoogstraten traveled to Vienna and Rome, where he was exposed to Renaissance art.

He became particularly interested in complex spatial constructions and illusionistic effects used by Italian masters. This inspired him to start painting interiors, a genre popularized by artists like Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer.
